Prepping for Purim, the Festival of Lights.

I won $10 yesterday at the Karaite Jews of America’s Purim party. My dad said that he thought it was one of the congregation’s biggest turnouts in years.

I think that God was rewarding me and the KJA for celebrating Purim at the appropriate time, in the 12th month. My dad laughs when I say things like this.

Did a Karaite Invent the Concept of Principles of Faith?

Professor Lasker provides direct translations of many classical Karaite works.

Professor Lasker provides direct translations of many classical Karaite works.

Most religious Jews are aware of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith. But Maimonides himself was not even the first person of his era to compose principles of faith.

It turns out that Maimonides was beat to the punch by the 12th Century Karaite Sage Judah Hadassi. Today, we’ll examine whether Hadassi was the first to create such a list and we provide a video by Eli Shmuel discussing Haddassi’s principles of faith.

My Neo-Karaite Confession

Mourad El-Kodsi's Classic Book describes Karaite Jewish Life in Egypt.

Mourad El-Kodsi’s Classic Book describes Karaite Jewish Life in Egypt.

I’ve made several confessions on the blog. I’ve admitted that I lied to a rabbi. I’ve acknowledged that I support the Rabbanut. I’ve told you that shawarma is unbelievably good (even though it is almost never kosher). And now I’m going to make the biggest confession of them all.

As was repeated throughout the funeral, Wahed avoided intra-Jewish polemics and diatribes, and made no distinction in the level of respect he showed Jews of all movements and denominations (Rabbanites, Karaites, Orthodox, Conservative, Reform). Wahed’s attitudes toward his Jewish brethren echoed a letter written by a Rabbanite about 1000 years ago.

Eli Shmuel: Coming to America

Eli FINALLY got his hands on a set of the Karaite Fact Cards

Eli FINALLY got his hands on a set of  Karaite Fact Cards

I can’t think of a better return to blogging than with the most exciting Karaite project in a while.  (At least, this is the most exciting project I am allowed to disclose . . . )

Eli Shmuel, a shaliach (of sorts) from the Karaite community of Israel, will be traveling the United States for several months, and he has some very ambitious goals while he is here.  I caught up with Eli last night upon his arrival to San Francisco.
