On Sunday, February 23, 2014, Eli Shmuel gave a 15 minute talk to the Karaite Jews of America on the rejuvenation of the Karaite Jewish movement in Israel. It’s been just over a year since I pondered whether 2013 would be a Karaite tipping point and or whether Karaite Judaism would even survive another generation.
So let’s hear what Eli has to say about the issue . . .
Yes, one of the younger men in the Israeli Community — who has young counterparts who were not mentioned in this clip — has performed priceless educational work for the younger generations, although I did not appreciate how he effectively belittled the subject of observing Shemiṭah (Release) Years by publicly defending in 2012 on the בני מקרא page @FB a misguided Rosh haShanah greeting by one of the page owners as the “Rosh haShanah for the Shemiṭah Years , Yovel [Jubilee] Years and releasing servants/slaves”, which was not even what the greeting’s author intended. I hope no traditional Qaraite educator will ever repeat such an error.
With all of that said, I commend Eli for his marvelous command of English and am curious where he acquired it, since I am sure it was not in an Israeli High School. Bravo ! 🙂
Sounds great. Behatzlacha!
