Now THAT makes sense. It almost seems as if many of the rabbinical laws take the actual rule, step back 5 paces and THEN draw the line – as if those 5 paces create a safety net. My opinions are not fully formed as I am still learning but I have often wondered how they got separate sinks from this scripture.

That is exactly what Rabbinic laws are designed to do! It’s based on a motto given by the Men of the Great Assembly, which is recorded at the beginning of Pirkei Avot: http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/682498/jewish/English-Text.htm
They call it a safety fence, rather than a net 🙂
